What else is it?

What else is it?

Art allows us to look at things not only for what they are but for what they can be. A coffee cup is not just a coffee cup. It is a holder of pens and flowers. It can represent the things we love and can also hold our longing and pain.

As artists, we see potential. We imagine places something can go. We take apart the moment and view it through its past, its future, its alternative dimension. Nothing exists as a singular entity. Our emotions take on symbols, and we express them through our art. In looking at beauty, we ask, what are you not seeing? In looking at ugliness, we ask, what is the gift?

As photographer Minor White said, “One does not photograph something simply for what it is, but for what else it is.”
