Symbolize This

I am fond of using symbols in my art. I’ve use birds a lot. In fact, people who know my work assume the birds they see in my photographs are not in their natural environment. They are often correct, but not always.

For me, all things bird represents freedom. It stands for an ability to rise above problems and see things from a bigger perspective. Birds are also carriers, bringing ideas and messages from the divine.

In art, symbols are a powerful means of communicating ideas. An icon can encapsulate thoughts, feelings, and entire systems. Thinking in terms of ideas and symbols, what comes to mind when you think of the following:

  • Owl
  • Dove
  • Hazard
  • Do not enter
  • Fire
  • Rose
  • Peace
  • Heart
  • Skull
  • Star
  • Crescent Moon
  • Spider
  • Rainbow
  • Fedex
  • Xerox

Symbols bypass language and speak to the emotions. They are used everywhere. We are bombarded by symbols that tell us what to think and how to buy. As an artist, you can use symbols to communicate your voice and your message.
