I had a silly thought that symmetry was simple. After all, the basic element is a simple shape, so it should stand to reason that a symmetry operation would be simple, no?
NO!
There are various types of symmetrical operations. The images at the bottom are Rotation Symmetry. Which, as the name implies, is rotating an element around a point. Here I used a circle and a triangle. The symmetrical operations were done in Adobe Illustrator. The final designs were harder to achieve than I expected.
The mandala is a combination of Rotation and Reflection. This was actually easier to achieve with an iPad app called iOranament. It was also a lot more enjoyable to play with, as calculations and grids are pre-established. There are also various types of symmetrical grids to design patterns on.
I played with symmetry all day.

Awesome! Can’t wait to see what you do!
That’s pretty cool, i’ll check to see if I can work that into a drawing today 🙂
