Goodbye Chi Chi DeVayne

Zavion Michael Davenport died a couple of days ago. She was best known as Chi Chi DeVayne, an American Drag Queen. She was 34 years old.

Yesterday a friend, asked where I found the courage to put myself out there through this blog. I answered, “Drag Queens.”

Over the past few years, I became a super fan of all things RuPaul’s Drag Race, much to the confusion and sometimes embarrassment of friends and family. Frankly, their discomfort did not faze me, as I took encouragement from the heroes in drag.

Through watching drag, I have learned that you can step out from definitions given by culture, family, society, gender… and identify with the essence of who you are. You can identify with your art and your heart. That gives me courage and hope for the world.

Chi Chi DeVayne appeared on Season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. She was a skilled and talented performer and showed up as sweet, straightforward, and entirely herself.

Thank you Chi Chi. I fell quite in love with you.

Who are your heroes? How have they changed you?

A heartfelt and vulnerable post Jamuna. You ask, who is my hero? You are my hero. I have told you several times that you are the reason I am where I am in my life. I am so grateful to you. Continue to be Chi Chi for us, because those who know you can’t help but fall in love with you too. Keep Daring Greatly.
