Selfies have been happening since the fifteenth century when Painters such as Masaccio and Andrea Mantegna added their own images to the crowds in religious paintings. In later years, Rembrandt painted portraits of himself over forty times and made many etchings of his own image. Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh are other painters who painted Self-Portraits.
Some would consider the act of painting or photographing oneself, narcissistic. Another way of looking at it is as a vehicle of self-expression and self-inspection. A selfie is an Autobiography.
