Arrival of Summer

Arrival of Summer

When I look at this photo, I hear birds chirping, and I’m not sure whether they are outside my window or in my memory.

I can hear the crunch of the earth under my NIKEs as I walk the open field, sweltering in the heat, even though the sky is cloistered in clouds. It is a hazy day in mid-June in the village of Murtal, Portugal. The town is awakening from the sleep of the COVID lockdowns. Already, so many wildflowers have met their peak and given up their delicate colors, leaving sun-baked announcements of dried flowers and grass, to hail the arrival of summer.
