A Blank Page and a Cup of Masala Chai

This is how I like to start each day. A blank page and a cup of masala chai. The rest of my day could be filled with appointments, errands, tasks, and classes to teach. The day can pass quickly and sometimes by the end of it, I wonder what I did.

So, my journal and tea are my first check-in of the day. The aroma, flavor, and warmth of the chai remind me to slow down and savor the present delicious moment, regardless of how many agenda items try and carry my attention to future moments. The blank page reminds me that no matter what happened yesterday, today is new.

Each morning I have the chance to reflect on my thoughts and feelings and mindfully set the tone for my day. I have the opportunity to speak to my oldest friend. Myself. One-on-one. To know I’m loved and cared for and thought of and valued.

It is from this perspective that I write blog entries, cook food, teach classes, and love my wife.

And each morning I begin again with a blank page and cup of masala chai.
